Survey data

Explore. Request.

Raw ape field survey datasets archived in the IUCN SSC APES Database. See where surveys were carried out, what the collection covers, and request the datasets you need.

Sampling map

Where the database holds survey data

The map shows all locations where observations were recorded during ape surveys archived in the APES Database, summarised as the number of records per 0.1° grid cell (about 11 km). It is a simplified image; the survey data themselves are provided on request.

The datasets are unprocessed field survey data as originally submitted to the IUCN SSC APES Database. They have not yet been converted to a standardized format, and datasets with major errors have been temporarily excluded pending cleaning. A fully standardized format for all datasets is expected by end of 2027.

In the request tool you can search the list of datasets and select the ones you need. Requests are reviewed by the APES database management team, who will then contact you directly.
